Sunday photo: Ramsey Cascades

Last Sunday, I hiked the Ramsey Cascades trail in the Great Smoky Mountains. The picture below was the payoff, the Cascades were frozen under crisp blue skies. You can check out all of the pictures here.

The Smokies have had snow at elevation since October and the park expects an especially harsh winter. Roads are closed to Clingman’s Dome as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway on the North Carolina side of the park.

KHR Kentuckiana Trails: The Year in Review

Starting the first week of December, I’ll run down the Kentuckiana trails I’ve hiked this year, including a round up of Great Smokey Mountains trails as well. I’ll begin with Jefferson Memorial Forest, which will include the Horine Reservation, Scotts Gap/Siltstone and Paul Yost sections of the forest. I’ll also review my favorite images from the trails this year.

I hope you enjoy this blog and I hope you’ll help participate and make this an excellent guide for area hikers. Let me know what you think and feel free to suggest any improvements.

Let’s get this started

Howdy.

My name is John Gowin, and I’m going to be your host at the Kentuckiana Hiker’s Review. When I created this blog, I imagined a resource for all of the hikers in Kentuckiana. A site where you could find out current trail conditions, share trail stories, and read reviews of outdoor gear. I also hope the community will share photographs of the beauty and wonder of hiking in Kentuckiana.

In addition to the trails in Kentucky and Indiana, we’ll include trail reviews across this great nation, from the Appalachian Trail to the Pacific Crest Trail, the Smokies to the Sierra Nevadas and much more.

This blog is just a start, but the time to start is now.

I hope you enjoy your visits to the Kentuckiana Hiker’s Review and come back often.

Welcome.

And tell your friends.

(I also blog at The Hiking Writer, where I feature some of my fiction writing, lots of my nature photography and views on pop culture and such, enjoy)
